Western NY Seasonal Pest Calendar: What's Active Each Month
Pests in Western New York follow the weather. Long, snowy winters push mice and insects indoors, and short, warm summers pack a lot of activity into a few months. Knowing what's coming lets you seal up, treat or book service before a problem starts, not after.

What pests are common in a Western NY winter?
Mice are the biggest winter problem. They move indoors in fall and stay through the cold months, nesting in walls, basements and attics. Older homes have plenty of gaps for them. See our guide to keeping mice out of an older house.
Fall invaders like stink bugs, cluster flies and boxelder bugs spend the winter in walls and attics. On sunny days or when the heat comes on, some wander into living spaces.
Bed bugs don't follow seasons, and holiday travel and visitors can bring them in.
When to call: Call as soon as you see mouse droppings or hear activity in the walls. Winter is also a good time to book exclusion work, weather permitting, so gaps are sealed before next fall.
What pests show up in spring?
Eastern subterranean termites can swarm in spring, often on a warm day after rain. Penn State Extension has a good overview of eastern subterranean termites.
Carpenter ants become active as it warms up. Large black ants indoors in March or April can mean a nest inside the house. Learn how to tell them apart in carpenter ants vs. regular ants.
Ticks become active once temperatures rise. The blacklegged (deer) tick spreads Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease in New York. See the NYS Department of Health tick and Lyme disease page and Cornell IPM's tick resources.
Wasp queens come out of hiding and start small nests under eaves and decks.
Fall invaders leave walls and head back outdoors, and some end up inside on the way.
When to call: Call us if you see large black ants or winged ants indoors, which are often signs of carpenter ants. Spring is a good time to book a carpenter ant inspection. GPS doesn't offer termite services, so if you suspect termites, contact a termite specialist.
What pests are worst in summer?
Wasps, yellowjackets and hornets build their nests through summer. By August, yellowjacket colonies are at their largest and most defensive. See our guide to yellowjackets, hornets and wasps.
Bats raise young in attics in early summer. The NYS Department of Health advises against excluding bats from late May through mid-August, while pups can't fly, so we don't do bat exclusion during that window. See bats in the attic.
Mosquitoes peak in warm, wet weeks. Standing water in gutters, buckets and kiddie pools is the main source. Penn State Extension covers mosquito biology and control.
Fleas build up in summer, especially in homes with pets. If you have pets, read is pest control safe for pets?
Ticks stay active all summer, especially in tall grass and at the edges of woods.
Spiders become more noticeable in late summer as they grow and feed on the insects around your home.
When to call: Stinging-insect visits are usually scheduled within 1 to 3 days. Call early in the season while nests are small. If you suspect fleas, call us and we'll come out and treat. We offer flea treatment, not separate flea inspections.
What pests move in during fall?
Stink bugs, cluster flies and boxelder bugs gather on sunny walls and crawl into gaps to spend the winter. See our fall invaders guide.
Mice start moving indoors as nights get cold.
Yellowjackets stay active until the first hard frosts and can be aggressive near food.
Adult blacklegged ticks are active in fall too, on warmer days, so keep up tick checks on people and pets.
When to book: Book a fall invader exterior treatment for late August through September, before they move in. Mouse exclusion, the sealing work covered in our mice guide, is best done in early fall, before the cold drives them inside.
Are any pests a problem all year?
Yes. Bed bugs live indoors and can show up any month. They hitchhike on luggage, used furniture and visitors. They aren't known to spread disease, but they're hard to get rid of without help. Cornell IPM has a detailed guide to bed bugs. For bed bugs, we use lower-risk products such as Apprehend where it fits the job.
Mice and other rodents can also be a problem any time of year once they're inside.
How can I stay ahead of pests all year?
- Late winter: Book exclusion and sealing work before spring.
- Spring: Watch for swarms and large ants indoors, and start tick checks.
- Early summer: Check eaves and decks for small nests, and clear standing water.
- Late summer: Book fall invader treatments for late August through September.
- Early fall: Seal gaps that mice could use, and keep up tick checks.
We use lower-risk products such as Ecovia and Eccentria where they fit the job. Warranty length and terms vary by service.
