Ants we see around Buffalo homes

Seeing ants in spring is common in the Buffalo area. Most of the time they're just annoying, but carpenter ants nest inside wood and are worth dealing with sooner. Smaller ants trailing to food in your kitchen, such as odorous house ants and pavement ants, are usually a different, less harmful species. We treat all ant types.

How to tell carpenter ants from other ants

Carpenter ants are large, usually black or black-and-red, with a single node at the waist and an evenly rounded back. Small piles of frass (coarse sawdust mixed with insulation and insect parts) under windowsills, along baseboards or in the attic or basement are a strong sign of a nest nearby. For the full comparison, read carpenter ants vs. regular ants.

Why moisture matters

Carpenter ants prefer wood that's already damp or starting to soften: leaky window and door frames, wood near roof leaks, chimneys or clogged gutters, decks and sill plates touching wet ground, and plumbing leaks. Finding them is often a clue that there's a moisture problem worth fixing.

What we do

We inspect to track the ants back to their colony, then place targeted baits that worker ants carry home to the nest. Colonies can take more than one visit to fully knock out, with follow-up visits as needed.

A recurring perimeter service helps keep ants out all season. Spring is a good time to book a carpenter ant inspection.
